Geography Awareness Week (GAW) comprises a range of suggestions and ideas for activities that students can undertake from Early Years right through to KS5. The activities are all linked to the current year’s GAW theme and are available in electronic poster format that can be downloaded from the Worldwise pages on GA website. The resources are for use either during the designated week (see below for details) or at any another time that may be more convenient for your school.
How to enter?
Simply download the GAW electronic poster. We would like examples of students’ work showing their engagement with the GAW theme to be submitted to us here at the GA (please email details or provide school website links to rgill@geography.org.uk) specifying which Key Stages your submitted work relates to. The best entries in each Key Stage will be showcased via the GA website and the GA Annual Conference. Entries received by the end of December each year from the KS3/4 category can be used in support of your school’s overall involvement in Worldwise, with a view to possibly winning an invitation to take part in the annual Worldwise Challenge.
When is GAW?
The nominated GAW week is the last week in June (so in 2009 the GAW week will be from 22nd to 26th June)
GAW theme?
Each year’s GAW has a theme running through the suggested activities. Keep your eyes open for news of the new themed resources for next year which will be available for download at around the time of the GA Annual Conference, which usually takes place near to the Easter holidays. In the meantime you can use still use the resources from the current year even if it is not the last week in June!
